Single Sign-On to non-SAP Web Server using SAPSSOEXT

I'd like to use SAPSSOEXT with a current version of Apache httpd to provide SSO using an existing SAP identity provider. The httpd server is used as a container for another application that requires REMOTE_USER to be populated with the authenticated person's SAP username so I would like to implement a web filter similar to the old, unsupported 5.0.2.8 version from SAP. I understand how to deploy the Java version of SAPSSOEXT - just not how to get the web filter functionality. Any advice on this?
